From Quincy, Illinois served as state senator, 1836-1841 and state representative, 1842-1843, delegate to the anti-Nebraska convention in Bloomington, Ill. in 1856 and to the Republican National Convention in 1860, appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill Stephen A. Douglas' seat when he died, and appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Johnson. Formed a law firm in Washington, D.C. in 1863 and practice there until 1866.
